The HSUS Offers Reward In Spotsylvania County, Va. Cat Mutilations

June 17th, 2009

Spotsylvania County Va. Cat Mutilations – WRIC News from Sarah Foster on Vimeo.

From the June 11, 2009 Humane Society press release…
“The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for mutilating cats in the Lafayette Village subdivision of Spotsylvania, Va.

The Case: News reports give the following account: On May 22, a kitten was found injured at the bottom of a deep window well, and–nearby–her mother and another kitten were found dead from obvious mutilation. A necropsy shows that the mother cat’s stomach had been opened with a blade and a dead kitten nearby had also been partially skinned. It is unclear if the mutilations occurred before or after the animals died. The kitten found in the window well survived.

Animal Cruelty:
Getting the serious attention of law enforcement, prosecutors and the community in cases involving allegations of cruelty to animals is an essential step in protecting the community. The connection between animal cruelty and human violence is well documented. Studies show a correlation between animal cruelty and all manner of other crimes, from narcotics and firearms violations to battery and sexual assault.

“Animal abusers can be dangerous to people as well as animals, And as long as the abusers think they can get away with this type of behavior, it will undoubtedly happen again,” said Ann Church, The Humane Society of the United States’ Virginia senior state director. “We appreciate the work being done by Shadow Cat Advocates to bring this case to our attention.”

The Investigators:
The Animal Control Division of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Anyone with information regarding animal abuse should call Spotsylvania Crime Solvers at 800-582-5822.

Resources
: The HSUS Animal Cruelty Campaign raises public awareness and educates communities about the connection between animal cruelty and human violence while providing a variety of resources to law enforcement agencies, social work professionals, educators, legislators and families. The HSUS offers rewards in animal cruelty cases across the country and works to strengthen laws against animal cruelty. Spay Day 2009

February 17th, 2009

Don’t forget Spay Day is February 24, 2009. Four million cats and dogs—about one every eight seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets, even purebreds. Maybe someone’s cat or dog got out just that one time or maybe the litter was intentional, but efforts to find enough good homes failed. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats and a proven way to reduce the vast numbers of animals who are born only to die prematurely and without a family who loves them.

Featured Cats : Callie & Cassat (URGENT)

February 4th, 2009

These two cats that need to be adopted very soon or the owner is going to have them euthanized. The situation is that this man’s wife recently passed away from cancer and these two cats were basically her babies. He is not really a cat person so he wants to find them a good home. He is getting ready to leave for 4 months so it is imperative that we find a good home for them.

Callie is an 11 year old black and white short-haired domestic female who likes being rubbed and snuggled. She also talks to her owners when she is hungry or needs affection. Cassat is a 10 year old gray calico, short-haired domestic female. Cassat is lap cat who will stay in a quiet lap for hours on end and loves to sleep in bed with her owners. Both cats are strictly indoors and are up to date with all shots.Contact Linda for more info at (540)720-0018 or lindara68@comcast.net

Featured Cat : Kayla

February 3rd, 2009

Kayla

Kayla is incredibly sweet considering she has had a rather rough life. She was dumped in the middle of a feral cat colony, had recently had kittens, and tested positive for FIV (feline aids). I have known people who have had FIV cats that lived to be 15+ healthy years. After being completely vetted and switched to high quality food, she’s high energy, purring away, and constantly wants attention. All she needs now is someone to give her lots of love and attention. Please call Karen at 540-623-6929 to find out more about this amazing sweetheart! Unfortunately, FIV+ cats are usually overlooked because people don’t know enough about them and are afraid of taking in a “sick cat”. Like HIV, FIV can remain “inactive” for years, and it’s common for cats to live a full lifespan without exhibiting signs of the virus. This virus is not transmittable to people, dogs, or other species – but it IS transmittable to other cats.

This pet is up to date with routine shots. This pet is already house trained. This pet has been altered.

Need your help

January 21st, 2008

We are collecting funds to be used as reward money in an attempt to get information on who killed Mikki’s cats. The reward is currently $800 and we would like to get it over $1,000 so we can catch this person or persons. In addition, we are building her an outdoor enclosure that will allow her cats to go out and still be secure. Please send any donations to: Shadow Cat Advocates, PO Box 514, Garrisonville, VA 22463. Please specify whether the donation is for the reward or the enclosure.
